From 'Sweezey' Site - seems an iffy source -------------------------------------------- 1900 Census - Living in Grant Co., IN (36), with wife Acuir(?) B. (28), and son Burr S. (8). Field was born in Ohio, his father in NY and mother in Ohio. Wife was born in IN, as was her father, mother born in Ohio. Son Burr born in Indiana. Field is an Attorney.
I could not read his wife's name at all. It looks like "Acuir", but could be almost anything beginning with an "A". Maybe it is Alice.
1910 Census - Living in Grant Co., Ind (46), with wife Anna (38) and son Burr (18). Field and his parents born Ohio, wife and son born Indiana. Married 19 years with one child. He is an Attorney. Listed as "Field W. Swezey".
I also found the following that may be for this person:
Grant County, Indiana Marriage Records Volume II Name: Field Swezey Spouse: Anna Sweetser Marriage Date: 04 Sep 1889 Book: 8 OSPage: 515 County: Grant
I also found a Harry Newton Swezey, who was also married in Grant County, Indiana. Since I know that Field was living in Grant County in 1900, and his unusual name, and not to mention that this marriage date matches perfectly to the 1900 census, I am going to assume that he is the one who married Anna Sweetser. And if I assume that much, I have to assume that the Harry Newton Swezey I find in the Marriage Records for Grant Co., is Fields' brother, Harry N. Swezey.
I found the following article in the 30 April 1890 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, that I believe pertains to this person:
"Sweezy is not quilty. The indictment against Dr. George V. Rockwell will be dismissed. A jury in the court of sessions to-day acquitted Field W. Sweezy, a young New York Lawyer, of the charge of having procured an unlawful operation on 18 year old Annie Murphy two years ago. The operation was alleged to have been performed by Dr. George V. Rockwell, of 226 McDonnell street, and he is under indictment. That indictment will now be dismissed. Sweezy was known to Miss Murphy as Cy Watson, and she made his acquaintance on Fulton Street, New York, in July 1888. She gave the story away to the police when she thought she was going to die. Sweezy now lives in Denver, Col. Rockwell denied under oath that he performed an operation. The jury were out only fifteen minutes."
I found another article around the same time about the above incident, and it says that Field is from Marion, Indiana. Another article says his father paid bail of $10,000 for Field. It appears that Annie was pregnant, and charged that Field was the father. He was a graduate of Columbia College. There were quite a few articles written about this incident, and I am 'pulling' facts from different articles that were written.
I just found another article that I believe pertains to this person. It is from the 12 Sept 1889 edition of the Waukesha Freeman (Waukesha, Wisconsin), it reads as follows:
"Mr. D.B. Sweetzer, of Marion, Ind., is in a towering rage just now because his daughter Anna loved F.B. Sweezey, a young attorney, well enough to elope with him, in spite of her father's invincible objections to the match. Mr. Sweetzer has disowned and disinherited his daughter."
Even though the middle initial is not correct, I believe this is the same person.
I just found another article, dated November 1905, from Marion, Indiana. It talks about a young girl in a Chicago hotel, and says: "Governor George W. Steele of the National Hilitary home and Mayor Field W. Sweezy have taken up the matter and will investigate it." I guess this means that Field is the Mayor of Marion, Ind. He sure has lived a colorful life.
Field W. Sweezey appears to have had a colorful life.
ANOTHER ENTRY ----------------
from web searches, others seeking info...while providing info:
I am seeking descendants of Field W. Swezey and his wife Anna Switzer. They had a son named Burr S. Swezey who was born in Indiana about 1892. Field's parents were Watson Swezey and Cornelia C. Field. In 1910 Field lived in Marion, Grant Co., Indiana and was an attorney.
I am seeking descendants of Constantine Cephas FIELD (1813-1886). While living in Painsville, Lake Co., Ohio he engaged in mercantile business as the firm of Field & Swezey. Mr. Field was married to Mary Ann WARNER of Concord, Ohio. The Field's had two daughters, Cornelia Calista FIELD (1839-1892) and Mary Adelia FIELD (b. 1845). Cornelia married Watson D. SWEZEY in 1860. They had one son, Field W. Swezey. Mary married John Q. DARROW who was clothing merchant in Painsville. They had two children; Curtis C. DARROW and Lou DARROW. Lou married a POST. If you are interested in any of these people, please email me.

Field W. Swezey and his wife, Anne B. Swezey, were the first people on record to live in the Phipps house (Grant County City Directory). Field W. Swezey had not lived in Marion all his life but Anne was born and raised there. Mr. Swezey was born on July 16, 1863 in Sheridan, Ohio, where he grew up during most of his early childhood. After nine years in Sheridan, Swezey moved to Painsville, Ohio where he graduated from high school. Field Swezey moved to Marion from Painsville, Ohio in 1883 after completing his law degree at Columbia Law School in New York City and after two years of practice. When he came to Marion, Swezey immediately started Brownlee and Swezey, a law firm with Hon Hiram Brownlee (Souvenir of the Daily and Weekly Leader) (which he “maintained active contact with. . . almost to the very hour of his death” (leader)) and also became a member of the Grant County Bar (Some Greater Marion Faces). Swezey married Anne B. Sweetser, the daughter of a local banker and a descendent of one of Marion’s pioneer families, in 1889 (Field Swezey: Leader Tribune). Anne was born in her family home on the corner of Second and Washington in Marion (Swezey Rights Scheduled). When she grew older and finished school, she became active in the local bank, which the Sweetser family had deep roots and connections with. Mrs. Swezey was one of the few highly educated ladies in Marion and was well respected throughout the town (Biographical Memoirs).
Swezey did not remain in Marion until his death, but ventured to Omaha, Nebraska where he started another firm and practice called Hubbard and Swezey and then coming back to Marion in 1893 (Field Swezey: Leader Tribune). When he returned, he became the city attorney and later turned towards politics. Field W. Swezey, running for the Republicans, became mayor of Marion in 1906 and remained the cities leader until 1912 leaving behind a clean administration. “His administration was characterized by a fearless enforcement of the law and a splendid record was left behind when he retired from public life at the close of his second term” (Field Swezey: Leader Tribune). Mr. Swezey was actively involved in the Gethsemane Episcopal Church, the Marion Golf Club, and the Meshingamesia Country until his death. Field Swezey died on Wednesday, March 30, 1932 at his home on Spencer, from a chronic illness that he had suffered with since 1915 leaving his wife with the house (Field Swezey: Leader Tribune). Anne B. Swezey continued living in the home until she moved into an apartment in 1938, where she lived until her death, putting the house up for sale (Grant County City Directory).
Mayor of Marion, IN 1905 per newspaper article at time.

The following is an excerpt of an article by Donald Bayles regarding the Swezey/Swazey family genealogy. It is the first that I have seen which mentions an Israel Swazey from Wales. Many other sources claim William from Normandy as an ancestor, but usually as a great-grandfather of John. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The Swezey (swazey) family is descended from John Swesye who was born in France in 1474 in France where a son William was born in 1496. They left Normandy in 1524 and settled in Weymouth, Dorsetshire, England. John Swezey of Southold was born in England in 1600, the son of Israel Swazey of Wales. John emigrated to Salem Mass. in 1629 with two sons Joseph and John. In 1652 John moved to Southold and in 1661 received an allotment of land in Aquebogue where he settled."
Year by Year for 1st Swezey in USA from Sweezey web site: -------------------------------------- 1621 - Christened - John, son of Robert Swasie - listed in "Parish Registers of St. Mary's, Bridport, Dorset, England. I believe this listing pertains to this John Swasie.
1633 - It is speculated that John arrives in America on the ship "Recovery", from London with his Aunt and Uncle - Elizabeth Swasie and her husband John Hardy. Elizabeth Swasie and John Hardy were married in St. Mary's, Bridgeport, Dorset, England on 11 Jan 1612/13. I cannot find any records for this ship in 1633.
1640 - John settled in Salem, Essex Co., Mass., where in 1640, John had four acres of land allotted to him on "ye Mayne road", what is now Essex Street. This is stated in B. F. Swaseys "Genealogy of the Swasey Family", but after much research, I have not been able to find any documents relating to this claim.
1651 - Feb 13, 1651/2 The Selectmen of Salem "Granted to John Swasey 40 acres of land to be laid out near Henrie Bartholmew his farme".
1651 - 14 April 1651, Robert Gutch assigns the apprentice contract of John Woolly to John Swasey of Salem. (from the Southold Records)
1652 - 14 January - Sells to his mother-in-law, Dorothy King (a Widow) his land and house. It would appear that John and his family moved soon after to Long Island.
1653 - 30 June 1653, sells lot to Jeffrie Massey of Salem.
1654 - Purchased Land from the Rev. John Youngs in Southold, Long Island. I have not found this document, only references regarding the purchase.
1655 - John was appointed one of the commissioners to fix the boundary line between Southold and Smithtown, Long Island, NY. On 14 April 1655, along with five others he was employed by the Assembly of the New Haven Colony, of which he was a member, to purchase of the Indian Sachem Warawacmy, the town of Brookhaven, Long Island. He acquired large tracts and water privileges of this new territory. At this time, Long Island is still under the jurisdiction of The New Haven Colony.
1658 - A John Swasey is listed in "List of Heads of Families in Southold, 1658", from the Town Records.
1659 - John Swasey refuses to take "The New Haven Colony Oath of Fidelity". Around 1658, the new "religion" known as "The Quaker Movement", arrived in America from England. In response to this new 'movement', the New Haven Colony officials instituted the Oath. It is quite possible that John was either a member, or sympathetic to this new 'movement', which is why he first refused to sign the Fidelity Oath. After numerous threats, John signed the Oath in 1660. I have found no documentation to show that John was ever a Quaker. This information comes from B.F. Swasey's book, "Genealogy of the Swasey Family".
From a book titled "Records of the Colony or Jurisdiction of New Haven, from May 1653 to the Union. Together with the New Haven Code if 1656" by Charles J. Hoadly. Hartford, Case, Lockwood & Company, 1858. pg 302. ------------------------------------------------------- Information being given that John Corey, John Swasey, Mr. Jon Booth, Joseph Younges senior, Tho: Ridar, Edward Petty, Tho: More junior, refused to take the oath of fidelity, it is ordered, that they shall appeare at the court of magistrates, the 19th of October, next, to answere it, if in the meane time they take not the said oath & certify it unto the court. ------------------------------------------------------ 1661 - On Nov 20, 1661, a John Swasey is allotted 4 lots of land in the Occabauck (Aquebogue) Dividend. Each lot consisted of approximately 250 acres. Only one other person (John Budd) received 4 lots, out of a total of 38 lots. The 4 lots were not contiguous, but was 2 separate double lots. I am not positive what the criteria was for allotting 'Lots', but I was under the impression it had to do with the size of a persons family, particularly the number of males in the family.
1665 - A meeting on 19 Mar 1665/66 in Southold agreed to divide Plum Island into shares for every man in Southold. A document dated 22 May 1666 lists a John Swazye, who is given 4 shares.
1667 - Supposedly moved to Aquebogue, on a lot later owned by descendant Rev. Moses Sweezey.
1675 - On the 16 Sept 1675 List of Taxpayers in Southold, we see a John Swasie Senior (2 heads), a John Swasie Jr., and a Joseph Swasie. This would be John Sr., with his two sons John Jr. and Joseph. The second "head" living with John Sr. would be his son Samuel. In 1675 he is taxed for 1 head, 10 acres, 28 pounds; 2 oxen, 2 cows, 22 pounds; 1 2-year-old, 1 yearling, 8 pounds 10 shillings. Amount, 58 pounds 10 shillings. Another list I found says John was taxed for 200 shillings for 1675.
Between 1676 and 1679, there is a 2nd and 3rd Aquebogue Land Division. There is a John Swazy listed who is given 4 more lots of land in the 3rd Division. I believe these documents pertain to John Sr. But, why are his two sons not mentioned? They are both of age, and Joseph was married by 1677.
1683 - A John Swazey and a Joseph Swazey appear on a "Rate Lists of Long Island" for Southold, with estimated value of property. John is 202 pounds, and Joseph is 99. I am not sure how to interpret this information. We know that son Joseph is married to Mary Betts at this time, and since he appeared to be living on his own in the 1675 tax list, this must be the same Joseph. But there should be two John Swazeys at this time - John Sr., who appears in the 1675 tax list, and his son John Jr. who was also listed in 1675 as a separate Tax Payer, and is 32 years old. This Tax Listing does not mention the number of heads in the household, so I guess it is possible that John Jr. has now moved into the house with his father. This is very hard to interpret. And, where is son Samuel? He is 30 years old at this time, and should be listed also. Maybe Samuel is also living with his father and brother John.
1686 Census - There is a listing for a John Sr. (3 males, 4 females), a John Jr. (2 males, 1 female), and a Joseph (1 male, 4 females). This appears correct. Two of the males in John Senior's household are John and son Samuel. Three of the females are his wife, and daughters Mary and Sarah.
