Name was Seger - changed to Sandeen before entering U.S., per his grandson CA Sandeen. According to CA Sandeen, it was tradition in Sweden to change name after service in the military.
Carl John Seger-Sandeen had an 8th grade education in Sweden and his last name was Seger, which was changed when he entered the military (mandatory). He was about 20 and living in a small town in Southern Sweden when he decided to join his older brother in Washburn, Wisconsin, who worked on the railroads there. He worked for the railroad his entire life and was a skilled cabinet maker for them. He was a strong believer in education, and it was very unusual in those days for all 4 kids in one family to go to college. He loved education and was an alterman in Hudson and a long time member of the school board, despite his own lack of formal education.
